PLEATS AND THANK YOU

pleats-and-thank-you

There aren’t many things that I will voluntarily wake up for on a weekend before 10 a.m., but an opportunity to romp around and brunch at Assembly Row (when it’s warm enough in February to not wear tights) with some gal pals is absolutely one of them. Especially when there was a time not that long ago that I didn’t have very many folks to do that with. Moving to a new city will do that to you!

As a self-proclaimed people collector, I have a gaggle of friends. In fact, my tribe is one of the things I’m most proud of. That tribe includes people from every phase of my life-  decade long companions, college buds, study-abroad pals, my family, old teachers, former co-workers, current colleagues, neighbors, clients, and the list goes on. It’s varied and it’s wide ranging and it’s awesome. If you’re in my life and have been important to me in some way, I’m probably not ever going to let you go. And that’s that! So when I relocated to Boston three years ago, and did not have one female friend to call on in this city, it was a very (I repeat, very) big struggle for me.

My husband is my world. He is my best friend, my partner, my video game companion, my confidant, my fellow foodie and my teammate. I moved to Boston for him, and though the initial idea of it terrified me, I would move again in a minute. I have truly fallen in love with what this city has to offer. And as much as I leaned on him during my first few years in Boston, and as much as he delivered on absolutely everything I could have needed to adjust to my new home, I still yearned for some female companionship. Sometimes you just have to have a gal pal you can grab lunch with, you know?

What’s a girl to do? Honestly, how do 30-somethings who work from home even go about making new friends in a new city? Does anyone else think it’s just about the most bewildering thing ever? PRO TIP: You attend a networking event entirely by yourself, meet a bunch of strangers, and ask them on blind friend dates until you find one you hit it off with. True life. And you know what? It works.

Maybe you’ve been here. Maybe you’re here now. But I see you and I hear you. Put yourself out there and you’ll find your new tribe. So wear am I now? With a pretty full cup and feeling oh-so-grateful for my new, incredible lady friends I have here in Boston. Y’all know who you are. And I am pretty darned thankful for you. Even when it means early weekend wake-up calls.
